In the 1930s, the National Park Service began plowing Trail Ridge Road in winter, ferrying skiers up in canvas-covered army trucks to ski down through Hidden Valley's powder and pines. By 1955, they'd formalized it—building T-bars, Pomas, a base lodge, and eventually a double chair. Hidden Valley became Northern Colorado's ski area: 2,000 vertical feet, $10 lift tickets, and the convenience of staying local instead of driving to I-70.

When shifting park policy and lean snow years forced closure in 1991, the lifts and lodge came down. The runs remained. Today, the old ski area sits quiet in Rocky Mountain National Park—a sledding hill at the base, forest reclaiming the slopes, and backcountry skiers still finding their way up the mountain.
